Our Story

Havens Construction is one of the most respected names in the Midwest.

We specialize in underground utility and site work. We work with federal, state, and municipal agencies. And we partner with private owners and general contractors, too.

It all started in 1968. Thomas A. Havens was approached to bid on the installation of a new sewer system for the city of Braymer, Missouri. Tom was an entrepreneur with a construction background. He jumped at the opportunity and never looked back.

Since then, the company Tom started has become an industry leader. Havens Construction is one of Kansas City’s top heavy utility contractors. We install water mains, sanitary sewers, and storm sewers. You’ll find our work all around the Midwest.

Now, the third generation of the Havens family has joined the company. And Havens Construction continues our tradition of quality, integrity, and innovation.

Steve Havens
Chairman & Chief Executive Officer

Steve joined Havens in 1972. In that time, he’s held positions ranging from Project Foreman to his current role as CEO. He’s managed field operations. And he’s responsible for many of the management processes that have served Havens so well.

In his current role as CEO, Steve oversees the strategic vision of the company. He works with key management and our partners to ensure Havens continues to be the go-to company for underground utility construction.

Eric Havens
President & Chief Operating Officer

In 2002, Eric became the third generation of his family to join Havens Construction. He started as an Estimator/Project Manager. Now, he serves as President and Chief Operating Officer.

Eric does a little bit of everything. He oversees financial and HR functions as well as banking and bonding relationships. He leads our field operations, scheduling, and equipment areas. And, he’s active in estimating and project management. Eric focuses on growth opportunities. He’s passionate about implementing our strategic plan and safety initiatives.

Bruce Laughlin
Senior Vice President

Bruce joined the Havens team in 1983. He’s a leader in estimating and project management. This includes training staff, overseeing job costing, and contract administration. Bruce’s areas of expertise range from large, municipal sewer and water projects to private residential projects.

Bruce’s current responsibilities also include project bid selection, business development, and marketing. He has been a force behind the development of Havens’ design-build project delivery services. Bruce is also dedicated to integrating technology throughout our firm.

Bob Krattli, P.E.
Senior Vice President

Bob has been with Havens since 1994. He’s a licensed Professional Civil Engineer. His current responsibilities include project bid selection and project management. He’s responsible for Havens’ estimating best practices. Bob is also involved with business development and marketing.

Bob plays an active role in our bid review process. And he has many strategic relationships with clients, vendors, and other industry professionals. These connections help Havens find the right partners for successful projects.

Gene Millsap
Project Manager & Safety Director

Gene has been a member of the Havens team since 1993. He has a bachelor degree in construction management and an associate degree in architectural drafting. But he started his tenure with us as a laborer.

Over the years, Gene has served as a Field Supervisor and a Construction Coordinator supervising what goes on in the field. Now, he’s active in project management and estimating. He’s also our Safety Director.
